May 22th Shell has held its annual shareholdersmeeting in The Hague. To our disappointment, but unfortunately not to our surprise, Shell hardly addressed the environmental and social problems it causes in the Niger Delta. Answers to questions were insufficient. Proposals vague. Promises non-commital.

The beginning of a solution is still as far away as it was yesterday. Living with Shell is still bad in the Niger Delta. And it keeps getting worse every day. Therefore, our demands will stay the same. We will continue to ask for the world’s attention. And we ask you to keep supporting us until the Niger Delta is cleaned.

SHELL MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

WE DEMAND THAT SHELL ANNOUNCES THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

• Develop a solid plan to clean up the oil pollution in the entire Niger Delta. 
  As recommended by the UN, this plan should include Shell depositing $1 billion to a special emergency fund for the most urgent clean up operations.
• Close all oil wells that are illegally flaring gas before January 1, 2013.
• Develop a clear plan to improve the maintenance of the pipeline network in Nigeria, and protect them against theft and sabotage.
• Offer serious financial compensation to farmers and fishermen whose means of living have been destroyed as a result of the oil leaks.
