The Global Campaign to Reclaim Peoples Sovereignty, Dismantle Corporate Power and Stop Impunity expresses its deep concern about the institutional situation of the already fragile democracy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The act of recognition of the self-proclaimed interim president, deputy Juan Guaidó, by the US and several Latin American countries, members of the so-called Group of Lima, is a deeply dangerous step towards supporting a break in the constitutional order, without democratic support and ignoring the president, Nicolas Maduro. This act is the high point of a process of attacks and destabilization of Venezuela that are configured in a pattern of intervention and violation of the sovereignty and integrity of this country.
What is in dispute is the interest of the large transnational corporations and the governments that represent and defend them, because of the huge reserves of oil, gas, bauxite, coltan, water and biodiversity that are under the control of the Venezuelan State.
The recognition of Guaidó, far from helping to alleviate, as proclaimed by the interventionist countries, the serious socioeconomic and institutional situation, contributes to its deepening and to a greater polarization of the Venezuelan society since it tries to precipitate a violent resolution of the existing conflict, with all the catastrophic consequences that this would bring to the human rights of the Venezuelan people.
We reiterate our solidarity with the people of Venezuela and we call on the international community to contribute responsibly to the peaceful and democratic overcoming of the conflict situation in that country, guaranteeing the sovereignty, peace and self-determination of the Venezuelan people.
